It's common to assume that you have to travel beyond Europe to find warm weather in the autumn months, such as in the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, or the Middle East. However, several fantastic European destinations are hot in October. From sun-drenched beaches and historical ruins to rich museums and exciting festivals,
If you're considering a trip to Europe in October, here are my top autumn destinations.
1. Sicily
Best for: Festivals
Average temperature in October: 19°C – 24°C
Sicily is a perfect choice for a trip in October. It provides an opportunity to discover the island's treasures without the hassle of overcrowded attractions. However, that's not the sole reason why I adore this destination. October is the beginning of various gourmet festivals where locals celebrate sausages, honey, wine, and more. If you have a passion for food, you will consider Sicily a culinary heaven in October.
2. Seville
Best for: Historical sites
Average temperature in October: 14°C – 26°C
I acknowledge that not all travelers are interested in the beach or nightlife scene. Some prefer delving into historical sites and uncovering the mysteries of medieval times.
If that's the case, Seville is the ideal destination for you.
It boasts the Cathedral of Seville, where Christopher Columbus's tomb is located, and the Archivo de Indias, housing important documents linked to the exploration of America.
3. Crete
Best for: Adventurous holidays
Average temperature in October: 17°C – 23°C
While Crete boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, ideal for a leisurely vacation, it is not a destination I would choose solely for relaxation.
Indeed, Crete has a plethora of attractions for tourists in October, including jeep safari tours, wine tourism, cooking classes, and horse riding. Therefore, be sure to participate in these activities to fully enjoy your trip.
4. Madeira
Best for: Hiking
Average temperature in October: 19°C – 26°C
For my athletic friends who enjoy exploring nature by foot, Madeira is an ideal hiking destination. The Vereda do Larano Coastal Trail, stretching from Machico Village to Porto da Cruz, offers breathtaking views of the area.
In October, I like to swim in the ocean and appreciate the island's natural beauty without the usual crowds.
This time of year falls between peak tourist season and low season, making it perfect for enjoying fewer crowds and pleasant weather.
.
5. Rhodes
Best for: Affordable Greek Islands
Average temperature in October: 19°C – 23°C
Upon arriving at Rhodes Island, you will undoubtedly be impressed by the architectural style that beautifully preserves the medieval heritage of the island.
Explore the charming cobbled streets of Lindos and make sure not to miss the opportunity to ascend to the summit of the Lindos Acropolis for breathtaking views.
Make a stop at St Paul’s Bay for snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, or venture to Kallithea Springs for a stunning sunbathing location.
You will also enjoy delving into the history and culture of Rhodes Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
I also suggest a trip to the Valley of Butterflies, where you can discover lakes, waterfalls, springs, and butterflies.
And to top it off: October being the off-season for the island means you can benefit from reduced prices on everything, including flights, accommodations, products, and services.
6. Cyprus
Best for: Beautiful beaches
Average temperature in October: 14°C – 26°C
Cyprus is stunning in all aspects, boasting magnificent scenery, delectable cuisine, and remarkable historical landmarks. However, its waters stand out above all.
I dare you to discover beaches more dazzling than those in Cyprus. For scuba diving enthusiasts, nothing compares to delving into the Zenobia shipwreck located 137 meters below the surface.
During your visit, make sure not to overlook the WaterWorld Themed WaterPark. The vibrant and cheerful ambiance of that destination is simply irresistible!
7. Canary Islands
Best for: Wonderful beaches
Average temperature in October: 22°C – 26°C
Whether you choose to visit Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, or any other Canary Island, you can expect pleasant weather and beautiful accommodations.
One of the places I love the most in the Canary Islands is Playa de Las Canteras in Gran Canaria.
The striking contrast between the deep blue sea and the dark brown sand never fails to captivate me whenever I visit.
If you enjoy Halloween festivities, the Canarian people have their own special way of celebrating “The Day of the Dead.”
As the name suggests, they aim to honour the dead on that day. Families, friends, and neighbours gather to tell stories and jokes about their deceased lovers.
8. Malta
Best for: Culture
Average temperature in October: 18°C – 25°C
As an avid traveller, I like to explore the culture, history, and heritage of every place I visit.
And I can’t think of a better way to learn the history and culture of Malta than the Megalithic Temples.
Beyond culturally rich temples, Malta has incredible beaches with picturesque water.
Golden Bay is one of my favourites. I recommend visiting one of the restaurants, so you can sit back and enjoy a meal by the beach.
I think October is the perfect month to explore the northeastern coast of Malta. From Mistra to Selmun, you’ll see the region’s most scenic views.
9. Ibiza
Best for: Nightlife
Average temperature in October: 15°C – 24°C
Of course, Ibiza is famous for its vibrant nightlife. Once the sun goes down, the city reawakens with electric vibes and energetic clubs.
Whether you’re in the mood for a vibrant party with world-class DJs or a cosy cocktail gathering by the beach, Ibiza is the perfect place to let your hair down.
After finishing all that partying, I recommend going to the Cala Comte beach to unwind. The beautiful turquoise waters and rocky coastline are totally dreamy.
The island’s rugged cliffs are just as breathtaking, offering unforgettable scenic
10. Antalya
Best for: Natural views
Average temperature in October: 14°C – 26°C
